Information systems are the fundamental technology to support our increasingly complex modern society and a broad knowledge about computers and information processing is required for progressing technology more. Our course provides a great deal of practical lectures in order to foster engineers and researchers involved in the developing information systems: a series of programming exercises in which even beginners can learn advanced programming techniques step by step, hardware design and exercises in which students learn about hardware operations and their designs, and network experiments in which students learn about the mechanisms of computer communications. Also our course provides classes of project-based learning in which students collaborate to develop a computer system. Education and research in our course are divided into two fields: intelligence and information engineering related to cutting-edge information processing systems and media information engineering related to media information systems such as computer graphics or sounds, and students will acquire advanced knowledge and techniques. Field of Intelligence and Information Engineering Student will learn the basics and applications of intelligence and information engineering, such as signal processing, image processing and pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and robotics, which serve as the foundation of future computer society. Field of Media Information Engineering Student will learn the basics and applications of media information engineering such as computer graphics, media systems and human interfaces, which can enrich a computer society. Computer Network Basics In both of the above fields, student will learn commonly the fundamental technology of information systems such as computer hardware and software, the theory and technology of computer networks and algorithms and security. How our research can be applied to society? Information technologies have become indispensable for building a safe, secure, and affluent living environment as typified by computer networks and information security, and are now used as fundamental technologies that support countless fields. For example, it is no exaggeration to say that the advancement and development of information engineering has contributed greatly to the realization of the automobiles, home appliances, and smart phones that we are all familiar with. As such, information engineering, which is making rapid progress and is constantly undergoing innovative research and development, will contribute to the further enhancement and development of the future information society. What this course looks for in students? We are looking for students who have the following abilities and qualities. Basic academic skills appropriate to the study of information engineering Communication skills enable actively to collaborate with others, and logical thinking skills enough for studying information engineering Strong interests in information engineering and willingness for contributing to solve various problems in society and daily life through information technology What kind of human resource will this course develop? We are developing education and research to acquire basic knowledge and ideas about intelligent information engineering and media information engineering that support the increasingly complex information society, as well as practical skills to apply the knowledge learned in today’s Internet of Things (IoT) society, with the aim of fostering engineers and researchers who can play an active and important role not only in local companies but on a global scale. What kind of career path is expected after graduation? A high rate of employment will be expected since people who are well-versed in information systems and information media are needed in every field, in every kind of job. FUJIWARA Tasuku [from Morioka Daishi High School, Iwate Prefecture] I chose the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Iwate University because I was interested in systems and robots using cutting-edge technology that I saw on the news, and I wanted to study information engineering. The laboratory I belong to is unique in that each student sets a theme of interest and conducts research according to that theme. My research theme is "design of a running course suggestion system. When running, courses tend to be the same every time, and my current goal is to create a system that allows AI to create and suggest courses. Through these activities, I have been able to realize the motivation and enjoyment of learning, and I am leading a fulfilling student life. After graduating from the university, I would like to go on to the graduate school to acquire more advanced specialized knowledge and skills, and in the future, I would like to develop systems that are useful to society as a system engineer.
